Taste & See
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. Psalm 34:19
Most kids don’t like mushrooms. My own kids can dig through a bowl of Bolognese sauce and excavate every last finely chopped mushroom fragment with the precision of a swiss watch maker.
But if you are still holding onto your notion that mushrooms are yucky into adulthood, it’s time for you to taste and see… On a sunny summer afternoon, in a small village outside of Avignon, I once experienced a plate of cèpes mushrooms (porcini for you biased Italophiles) simply sautéed in olive oil and served plain over fresh pasta that made me call into question all of my life choices. While I may be a tad hyperbolic about the value of fungi, the point is that there are certain notions that should be challenged by tasting and seeing if they still hold true. That goes for much more consequential notions than mere gastronomy.
If you have not challenged your notion of what you believe in, God encourages you to taste and see for yourself. In Psalm 34, David testifies that I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears (Ps. 34:4), before pleading with you: Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! (Ps. 34:8)
